The original E-6A manufactured by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boeing_Defense,_Space_%26_Security\">Boeing&#8217;s defense division<\/a> entered service with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Navy\">United States Navy<\/a> in July 1989, replacing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lockheed_EC-130\">EC-130Q<\/a>. This platform, now modified to the E-6B standard, conveys instructions from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Command_Authority\">National Command Authority<\/a> to <a class=\"mw-redirect\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fleet_ballistic_missile_submarine\">fleet ballistic missile submarines<\/a> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communication_with_submarines\">communication with submarines<\/a>), a mission known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TACAMO\">TACAMO<\/a> (&#8220;Take Charge And Move Out&#8221;). The E-6B model deployed in October 1998 also has the ability to remotely control <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LGM-30_Minuteman\">Minuteman ICBMs<\/a> using the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airborne_Launch_Control_System\">Airborne Launch Control System<\/a>. The E-6B replaced Air Force <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boeing_EC-135\">EC-135Cs<\/a> in the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Looking_Glass\">Looking Glass<\/a>&#8221; role, providing command and control of U.S. nuclear forces should ground-based control become inoperable.
